Apple Patents Technology for AR Touch Detection Using ML and Depth-Mapping Cameras

As the iPad and iPhone have mostly demonstrated to a great extent, much of Apple’s hardware nowadays relies heavily on accurate detection of direct touch inputs, such as a finger resting against a screen, or on a trackpad, in Mac’s case. However, as people across the globe depend on augmented reality for both entertainment and work, they require interacting with digital objects that aren’t equipped with physical touch sensors. Quite recently, Apple has patented a prime technique for detecting touch using Machine Learning (ML) and depth-mapping cameras.
As per patent standards, Apple’s technology in the depth-based touch detection system is pretty straightforward – the external cameras work together in a live or real-time environment for creating a three-dimensional depth map by measuring the distance of an object, for instance – a finger, from a touchable surface and then further determining when the object touches the surface. Crucially, the distance measured is designed in a way so that it becomes usable even when the cameras change their position, depending partly on training from an ML-based model to discern touch inputs.
Illustrations of the technique corresponding to Apple’s patented technology demonstrate three external cameras working together for determining the relative position of a finger, which is a concept that might turn out to be somewhat known to the users of Apple’s triple-camera iPhone 11 Pro models. Similar multi-camera arrays are most likely to appear in the future devices of Apple, such as the new dedicated AR glasses and iPad Pros, allowing each to determine finger input conveniently by applying ML knowledge and depth-mapping a scene to analyze the intent of changes in the finger’s position.

Equipped with this technology, AR glasses in the future could efficiently eliminate the need for trackpads and physical keyboards by replacing them with digital versions, which only a user can see and further interact with adequately. Such AR glasses could also enable user interfaces to be anchored to other surfaces like walls, creating a secure elevator conceivably that could only be operated or brought to particular floors with the help of the AR buttons.

Apple has been granted the patent US10,572,072 corresponding to the AR touch detection technology – invented by Sunnyvale-based Daniel Kurz and Lejing Wang. Apple had first filed the Patent Application at the end of September in 2017. Tesla Files Patent Application for New Aluminum Alloys

As supported by a new Patent Application submitted by Tesla, the car manufacturer has developed aluminum alloys for die-casting of parts for electric cars.
These aluminum alloys, which besides a high yield strength and a high extrusion speed can also maintain high thermal conductivity, have been developed by the Tesla material team headed by alloy expert named Charles Kuehmann.
An extract from the patent application describes problems with the current aluminum alloys. The application reveals that the commercial cast aluminum alloys exist in two forms – either possessing high yield strength or having high conductivity. For instance, the famous A356 aluminum alloy possesses the yield strength of over 175 MPa but the conductivity of around 40% IACS. Conversely, the 100.1 aluminum alloy possesses a conductivity of more than 48% IACS, but a yield strength of 50MPa. However, for certain parts like rotors, inverters, stators, etc., within electric vehicles, both high yield strength and sufficient conductivity are desired. Moreover, it is desirable to cast the electric-vehicle parts through a quick and reliable low pressure and high-velocity metal injection or high pressure die casting process. It is because current cast alloys don’t well serve the application of these parts. Poor castability of the alloys can lead to hot tearing and result in fill issues, which decreases the mechanical and electrical properties of the end cast part. Hence, there’s still a need to develop cast aluminum alloys with improved conductivity, high strength, and sufficient castability.
Tesla is trying to create alloys that maintain high strength and improved conductivity while being resistant to hot tearing to be used in die casting drive unit components. Tesla’s new alloys are expected to solve the issues with the current aluminum alloys.
Tesla, in its application, revealed that the new aluminum alloys could be tweaked to achieve the yield strength between 90 MPa to 150 MPa and conductivity between 40% IACS to 60% IACS. Besides, it also claimed that its new alloys would support die casting. Dyson Files Patent Application for Headphones with Built-in Air Purifier

Dyson Ltd, a British technology company that designs and manufactures household appliances such as vacuum cleaners, air purifiers, etc., has applied for the Patent Registration of a new pair of headphones with a built-in air purifier.
Filed with the UK’s Intellectual PropertyOffice, the company’s patent application describes a pair of headphones with advanced technology-based air filters built into its ear cups. Diagrams provided in the application showcase a band that sits across the wearer’s mouth to serve them with clean air and can be folded away when not in use.

Dayson already deals in producing a wide variety of air purifiers for home, but these undoubtedly don’t provide much help when the wearer is out or about. Besides, people in almost all parts of the world care enough to wear face masks to be safe against harms due to pollution. In addition to highlighting these facts, the company’s patent stated that this is why there’s a crucial need for a portable device that could more effectively filter out pollutants, even if it comes with the stigma of partially covering the wearer’s face. It also claimed that the new device would help in combating the harmful effects of air pollution in several cities worldwide.
Dyson’s Patent Application noted that the ear cups include motors that spin at near about 12,000 RPM to draw in around 1.4 liters of air per second, which give an idea like it could produce a fair bit of noise. With 12,000 RPM impeller and one motor on each side of the wearer’s head, it sounds that these units would feature active noise canceling (ANC). However, whether or not the motor’s noise will be a distraction to close coworkers and commuters is not clear. And when it comes to the appearance of the wearable air purifier, the front strip designed to direct air towards the nose and mouth may be more attention-getter as compared to standard antiviral mask.

As it is just a patent, a product of this type isn’t guaranteed. Nevertheless, Dyson has been working on wearable pollution-beating headphones to purify the air around the wearer for over a year. So, it appears that this could soon become a reality. Furthermore, the statistics indicate that the device may be something that you could not wear every day and everywhere. Google Gets Patent In India for Technology on AR-based Virtual Graffiti

Google has recently obtained a patent in India for its technology to create virtual graffiti in a mobile virtual and augmented reality (AR) system, something that would help users leave a message for them or their friends at a location in the future.

The American Multinational Technology Company, specializing in Internet-related services and products, said in its Patent Application that the virtual graffiti would aid the user to leave a message for the second user at a specific location. The company provided an example that if a person wishes to give a message suggesting his or her known ones to try a particular dish at a restaurant, then the message can be virtually written on the door of the restaurant, and left for the second user to view. When the second user visits the restaurant, he/ she will get an indication that the place is available with virtual graffiti. Ultimately, the message left on the door of the restaurant will appear to him/her when viewed with the AR system.

It further claimed that if a user with an enabled device wants to send a virtual graffiti to other users as a part of the AR scene, he or she needs to create the graffiti, associate it with a location, and provide a list of users who are allowed to view it. The device will transmit the provided information to the server, which is scheduled to periodically monitor the location of the devices of users on the list. When any device comes near the location, it will notify the user through an alert. However, virtual graffiti will be available only to those who are allowed to view it, by the individual who created the virtual graffiti.

It later changed to Google Technology Holding LLC through an application in 2016. According to reports, Google acquired Motorola in 2012 and later sold it to Lenovo in 2014.

With this patent grant, it seems that Google is nurturing its AR field. Reports showed that the company has been nourishing its AR research through the AR platform by making tools available to AR developers for creating AR experiences. Solapur-based Farmer Gets Patent for A Variety of Custard Apple

After a labor of 10 years made to drew success with NMK – 1 Golden, a variety of custard apple, whose annual production reached up to 250 tonnes this year, Solapur-based farmer named Navnath Kaspate has recently got a patent for it under the Protection of Plant Variety and Farmers’ Rights Act.
Navnath Kaspate said that his Patent Application representing a variety of custard apple was under scrutiny with the central government of India for the last three years. Mr. Kaspate is Sixty-four-year-old and from a village named Gormale situated in the arid area of Barshi taluka in Solapur district. In his early days of farming, he used to cultivate grapes. But later, after gaining experience, he realized and revealed that cultivating custard apples is remarkably cheaper than growing grapes.

In a conversation with the Times of India, Kaspate unveiled that through years of experience and several researches, he has now succeeded in developing more than 40 varieties of custard apple in his field.
He said that they worked NMK-1 Golden variety for near about ten years, from 2001 to 2011. He spent most of his quality time in his fields, and after successful trials, rigorous work based on various and continuous researches and experiences, he and his team were able to bring up the variety, which led to their success. He continued by saying that he had been cultivating custard apple of this specific variety from the last many years, and every year, there has been a high increase in production. Kaspate revealed that out of 45 acres, 25 acres region of his land possess NMK – 1 Golden plant, whose average annual production has now reached to around 250 tonnes that can fetch returns up to Rs. 1.25 Crore.
Navnath Kaspate’s son Pramod said that NMK – 1 Golden variety has proved to be superior than other local varieties on many fronts. Not just the size of the fruit, but even the per acre production is high as compared to previous years. Besides, it is found to be tastier and sweeter than the early fruits. Its digestive power also appeared to be enhanced. He added that spending Rs. 60,000 for an acre can provide the returns of around two lakhs to five lakhs, after a small period of two years.

Pramod ended the conversation with a statement that on the remaining 20 acres area of their farm, a nursery has been developed for research and cultivation of saplings of NMK – 1 Golden variety, and also that over 10 lakhs saplings are being cultivated at the nursery annually and then, supplied to around 18 states. Huawei Secures Patent for Smartphone with Triple Flip Camera

With the patent that has recently been secured, Chinese smartphone maker Huawei is expected to soon release a smartphone with a motorized triple flip camera. The company filed this patent with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) back on January 9 this year but received the grant last week on December 17.
In terms of the pictures accompanying the Patent Application, the motorized camera appears to be similar to that of the Asus ZenFone 6 released this year.
News portal Gizmochina reported that while the design of Huawei’s smartphone and the Asus ZenFone 6 is a bit similar, but the upcoming device from the Chinese smartphone maker will feature three cameras instead of two. It also reported that the triple camera could be flipped to 180° facilitating users to use it as the front camera also.
In simple terms, the two smartphones are different as the Asus ZenFone 6 has a dual camera, while the Huawei patent application showed a device with three flip camera design.
Although the model name and other specifications of the smartphone are not revealed yet, an image showcasing the flip mechanism on the rear panel has been included in the supporting documents to the patent application. In total, the Patent Registration Application includes around 12 images showing a full-screen smartphone with a triple camera.
Additionally, Huawei appears working on the launch of a new Huawei P30 Lite (2020). As the present P30 Lite was launched in March this year, it can be hoped that the upcoming P30 Lite (2020) will be released in March 2020. Besides, it is predicted that this new smartphone will be launched in Europe first. When it comes to the phone’s specifications, there is very little information as yet. The two aspects being shared about the new P30 Lite are that it will be available in two colors -Blue and Breathing Crystal and that the price would be €349 (around ₹27,000). Though no technical specifications of this 2020 version have been shared, yet the device is expected to come with some improvements on the present 2019 model.
Coming back to the recently approved patent for the smartphone with a triple flip camera, there is no guarantee that it soon or ever be converted into a real-life patent as many other candidates file patents of this kind. It can be just that Huawei is simply strengthening its Intellectual Property bases in case the flip-phone form-factor kicks off to such an extent that it needs to compete with one of its own.
